The entries are generally listed with the subject of the record indicated first, followed by other relevant information, including a brief description, where it was located, etc..  The entire list was updated in December, 2004, and contains many additions to the original list posted on the web site in the late 1990’s.  I also rearranged the entries, tried to group them as much as possible by subject matter, starting with the immigrants in America, then moving back in time to the family in Germany (primarily Möglingen and Hemmingen), and finally to the beginnings in Switzerland.

City Directories, Detroit, Michigan.  They cover the years 1837-1935.  They contain the names of heads of households, their addresses, occupations, etc.  Also information about churches, cemetaries, and much more.  Searched about 30 of them, traced the movements and changes in the VarnBuhler family.  LDS FHL films 1376818-1376843, 1611498-1611513.

During the late 1880's and early 1900's the two main spellings of our name, VanBuhler and Varnbuhler, were used in what appears to be an almost random manner.  Listings of those names in the yearly Detroit City Directories were intermixed, with some of the family being in one part of the list as VanBuhlers, and others listed as Varnbuhlers.  Eventually the spelling VanBuhler became the one adopted by most of the family, for unknown reasons, and that is the spelling used by virtually all members of the family living in the United States today.

Question (Asked of a genealogist in Switzerland): How did the name Varnbühler derive from the place-name Farnbühl?

Answer: Location names were created before surnames; when someone moved to a different village (e.g., Farnbühl) he would be called "the Farnbühler" -- at a later stage this would often become a surname.  So when Hans from the Farnbühl farm would go "downtown" he would be called Hans from Farnbühl - or Hans Farnbühler -- to differentiate him from other Hans’s.  (Also, F's and V's were interchangable).

Beeli von Belfort family.  The Beeli von Belfort family was very prominent noble family in Chur and the surrounding area.  An Agnes Beeli von Belfort was allegedly the wife of Ulrich Varnbüler, mayor of St. Gallen, and allegedly the daughter of Ulrich Beeli von Belfort and Elizabetha von Castelmur.  A search of a boxed collection of extensive genealogical records of the Beeli von Belfort family found no Agnes as their daughter, it only showed them as having 2 children, Martin and Euphrosenia.  (So who is the Agnes Beeli von Belfort that is frequently noted as the wife of mayor Ulrich Varnbüler ?)  Nor was their an Amalie or Amalia von Belfort, who is mentioned in other records in connection to the Varnbülers.  Nor was there any mention (that I could find) of Ulrich Varnbüler or a marriage to one of the vonBelfort daughters.  Therefore it may still be an open question as to who was the wife of the famous Ulrich Varnbüler of St. Gallen.  Kantonsbibliothek and archive, Chur, Switzerland.
